I have been busy the past few months with my family. My daughter just signed with Campbellsville University to wrestle for their women's team. We are very proud and excited for her! Abby is a special girl with big goals. She wrestled for eight years on a "coed" team. She was the only thing that made it coed of course. There have been a handful of great girls that have come out and attempted to compete with and against the boys. However Abby has the distinction of being the longest running high school female wrestler in Kentucky. No other girl in Kentucky has ever wrestled for eight consecutive years that included all four years of high school. Abby has had to work very hard to even earn an opportunity to wrestle in matches and tournaments because she has had to fill in the empty spots on the team. Unable to beat out her male team mates for a prime spot in the lower weights that would have made her more competitive, she often wrestled in the 132 lb. and 134 lb. weight classes. She would wrestle both boys and girls, mostly boys because there are few girls that wrestle.
My daughter wrestling has had it ups and downs. Mostly though it has taught her that her dreams are obtainable with hard work and determination. she can make a difference. People in the wrestling community of Kentucky know my daughter. They know she is a fierce beautiful girl that has earned their respect on and off the mat. She is truly an inspiration to me and to others. She has inspired little girls to come out and wrestle. I can see them walk by her with aw in their eyes. They come out and wrestle with the desire to be like her. I have to say that is an incredible aspiration for a young girl. They could not pick a better role model.
The beauty of it all is that Abby sees none of that. She does not know her own beauty, her own influence. She knows she has worked her ass off for years with the promise that when she gets to college and wrestles other women she will have her time to shine. Every time it was hard, we would remind her of her goal to wrestle in college where her hard work and dedication would finally pay off and the spotlight would be hers. That time is coming and I can't wait to see what all she has to show the world.
Abby is my inspiration for fierceness in my female characters. She has the heart and soul that I want to give to the world through my characters and their stories. I could not ask for a better inspiration than a young fierce woman such as Abby.
I hope you all follow Campbellsville Women's Wrestling Page on Facebook. For all of those writer's looking for incredible fierce female inspiration you will find it there. Those young women. my daughter included, have all got a fierceness that burns inside. It is evident on and off the mat because wrestling is the most incredible sport. It teaches our children self discipline, self respect, and personal responsibility. It provides the skills a child needs to be strong in mind and body. When they are strong in mind and body, they have what they need to survive the trials and tribulations of not only middle and high school but life in the real world as well.
Cheers to fierce women! Cheers for Wrestling! Cheers for Women's Wrestling!
